Tom Waits 'Innocent When You Dream'

An exert from the book that congregates interviews with Tom Waits, from 1974-2004:

Waits drives a 1960 four-door Cadillac Coupe De Ville. It's a bigger car than he probably needs, and he admits that. It devours gas, smells terrible, radio doesn't work. But it's good for little trips, like visits to the dump. Dumps, salvage yards, rummage sales, junk shops--these are his special retreats. Waits loves to find strange and resonant objects hidden deep in piles of garbage, objects he can rescue and turn into new kinds of musical instruments.

"I like to imagine how it feels for the object to become music," he says. "Imagine you're the lid to a fifty-gallon drum. That's your job. You work at that. That's your whole life. Then one day I find you and I say, 'We're gonna drill a hole in you, run a wire through you, hang you from the ceiling of the studio, bang on you with a mallet, and now you're in show business, baby!'"

From an interview for GQ, June 2002, with Elizabeth Gilbert.

Tom Waits 18th album 'Bad As Me' is released in 50 minutes time.

Life imitates music.

So here's the story: I'm 20, I'm living in Southampton and I'm a student (for the 1st time). I buy the album by Manchester DJ Lionrock called 'An Instinct For Detection', because Muzik magazine told me to. I put the track 'Snapshot On Pollard Street' on repeat for the next few years...

... I graduate, work in a factory in Arundel for a year making pig pens, then win a place at Manchester's School of Sound Recording in a competition and move up to Chorlton and then Withington... 12 years later I move from Withington to Pollard Street in Ancoats (up Wilmslow Road) and attempt to become a photographer after getting an art degree.

I'm sat in Pollard Street, with my camera, listening to the tune I'd forgotten about whilst freaking out.

Move house, job hunt, and generally take on more than you can chew while in the process, letting people down... and then finish the piece.

For the long suffering, Richard. 2 more to make now.

Envelope Artwork Triptych WIP Part 4

Go over the scruffy paint bits with pastel blocks, accidentally spray the work with craft mount instead of fixative, take a photo.

Part 4:

Correct mistakes.

Envelope Artwork Triptych WIP Part 3

Draw a rough outline of a desired shape in black pen and then splat acrylic over it. Smear the paint where necessary with a palette knife. While the paint is drying, shave your head and listen to A Guy Called Gerald.

Part 3:

Throw paint at it.

Envelope Artwork Triptych WIP Part 2

Find a well ventilated area, like a back garden, and hope the neighbours don't call the police as you stand in the dark with a load of spraycans, in a black hat and hoodie, with a torch in your mouth.

Part 2:

Spray the envelopes.

Envelope Artwork Triptych WIP Part 1

I have been commissioned to make 3 artwork envelopes for someone, so I suggested I link them as a triptych so they can be displayed on the wall together.

A friend saw my last envelope design when it was half finished and said they liked watching it develop, so I've decided to post Work In Progress shots for this one.

Part 1:

Tape the 3 6.5" x 9" brown post office envelopes to an old B&Q shelf with a 1.5" gap between each.
